Essential Nutrients You Need to Detox Successfully

Date: 13th January 2016 | Created by: Troo Healthcare | Tags: detox, cleanse, detoxify
Most people think of detoxification in terms of occasional liquid diets, infrequent special diets, and supplements with obscure ingredients that hardly anyone has heard of. On the contrary, the best detox program looks very similar to the normal healthy diet most physicians and nutritionists recommend. It is not something you do once a year, but rather something you do permanently. It does not involve special foods or mysterious nutrients, but rather the same nutrients that the foods in a healthy diet provide.

What Is A Detox?

Unlike what the authors of fad detox programs would have you believe, detox does not refer to an alien substance' ability to remove toxins from your body. Instead, it refers to the process whereby your body cleanses itself from toxins. Your immune system dispatches cells to kill and remove bacteria, viruses, fungi, chemicals, and other substances from all over your body. Many of your cells also have their own defences against foreign substances that threaten to damage them. Many of these substances are then guided to your liver, kidneys, or lymph nodes to be broken down further, or to your skin, your lungs, or your intestines from where they are excreted. Your job is to ensure that your immune system, your detox organs, and all the cells in your body are healthy enough to remove these potentially harmful materials.

A Detox Diet

If your diet is sufficiently healthy and nutrient rich, you do not need occasional liquid or other special diets that deprive you of important nutrients for days or weeks. In fact, since the special diets rob you of essential nutrients and deprive you of energy by slowing down your metabolism, they may even compromise your body's ability to detox itself.

Detoxing Nutrients

Since scientists have mapped only a small number of the functions of the various nutrients, this is necessarily a partial list.

  • Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It counteracts oxygen rich substances like hydrogen peroxide, because they damage cells through oxidation. Citrus fruits, berries, dark leafy greens, and tomatoes are good sources.

  • Vitamin E is another antioxidant that protects especially your cell membranes from being invaded by foreign organisms. If they cannot invade, they are immediately expelled. Avocado, almonds, hazelnuts, olive oil, pumpkin, squash, and dark leafy greens contain plenty of it.

  • Beta-carotene is a substance that your body converts to vitamin A. It is soluble in fat, which enables it to operate almost everywhere in the body, including the brain and nervous system whose cells it protects from invading organisms and free radicals. The red, orange, and yellow pigment in pumpkin, carrots, squash, papayas, mangoes, cantaloupe, and similar vegetables and fruits are good sources of it, together with lycopene, which the alternative health community believes is another strong antioxidant.

  • Melatonin is not only the hormone that regulates your sleep cycle, it also protects cells from damage and fights off viruses and chemicals that cause inflammation. Some scientists have also discovered that it can bind to metals to remove them from your body. Eat enough walnuts, almonds, orange bell peppers, berries (especially goji berries), banana, oats, flax seed, and tomatoes to help your body make plenty of this hormone.

  • Glutathione is another cell protector, and is also believed to aid the liver directly, but the way in which it does so is not yet well understood. It can also bind to metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic to remove them from your cells. Your body produces it from sulphur and vitamins B6 and B12, so eat enough garlic, onion, beans, dark green leaves, avocado, and a bit of meat for the B12.

  • Uric acid is one of your body's main antioxidants, protecting cells against free radicals and other substances that might harm or age them. Whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and meat all contain the zinc from which your body produces it.Iodine Supplement

  • Iodine plays several detox roles. It is such a powerful antioxidant that some researchers have demonstrated it can reduce the risk of developing or dying of breast and stomach cancer. Some people also believe that it protects the body from metals and radioactive substances. If you eat fish and sea vegetables, your body can obtain enough.

  • Metallothioneins are proteins your body uses to expel heavy metals and possibly other toxins too. They are also strong antioxidants that remove harmful reactive oxygen species. Cysteine rich foods soy, sunflower, oats, chicken, eggs, and beef will allow your body to make enough of them.

  • Fibre, as we already know, promotes regular bowel movements. This is essential to detoxification for dietary fibre several reasons. It prevents metals and other foreign organisms from being absorbed from your intestines to your bloodstream. This is why some researchers have found that even wheat bran can remove heavy metals from your body. It also prevents food from decaying in your intestines indefinitely, which saves you from an overgrowth of intestinal bacteria that feed off the food there. Beans, whole grains, and leafy green vegetables are the superstars here.

  • Sulphur also has cell protective and metal removal abilities. This is why so many people recommend garlic, onions, and brassicas like broccoli as detox foods. They do not only remove metals, they have also been shown to prevent them from damaging cells.

  • Cilantro or coriander promotes the excretion of metals and other toxins, and it is absolutely delicious to eat in salads and in a homemade curry. Try topping your sandwich with a little too for a tasty kick.

  • Selenium is abundant in Brazil nuts, shiitake mushrooms, pinto beans, chia seeds, brown rice, cabbage, and spinach, all foods that bind to metals, guide them to your intestines, and help to excrete them.

Useful Supplements

As you can see, the best detox agents are present in your fridge and kitchen cupboards already in the form of the most nutritious foods you buy: whole grains, pulses, green vegetables, orange vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, fish, and lean meat.

If you are concerned that you might not consume enough highly nutritious foods to assist your body to keep itself healthy, you can take a good multivitamin and multimineral supplement, a cysteine supplement for detox proteins, and a variety of good antioxidant supplements like green tea, acai berry, and resveratrol (the super healthy polyphenol found in red grapes). Then your detox program is up and running with no occasional starvation diets needed.
