Acai Berry and Weight Loss – Truth or Myth ?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Anyone who has been on the lookout for health products would have heard about the various properties of acai berry juice. The juice is extracted from the acai berry, a berry that is found in the palm trees of the Amazon in Brazil. This wonder fruit has been consumed by the Brazilians for many years and it is only recently that it has been brought to the forefront so that everyone can benefit from the super food’s characteristics. The super food is known by many to help weight loss and has various other properties as well. It is available over the Internet and all that you need to do is to type in acai in a search engine to obtain various websites where you can buy acai berry juice.

The Importance of Buying Good Quality Acai Berry Juice
The acai berry needs to be extracted well so as to retain all the beneficial properties that it has. The berry itself is known to rot within a day and therefore it is important that the plant be grown near the manufacturing unit or the manufacturing unit be placed close to the place where the acai berry grows naturally. It is therefore pertinent that you choose the acai juice that you consume after adequate levels of research and reference.

Weight Loss Properties
This is one property of acai berry that needs no mention. Anyone who knows about the blue coloured berry seems to know about the fact that it is essentially very good for weight loss. The weight loss properties of the berry or the acai berry have been popularized in Oprah Winfrey’s show as well and it is said that she along with other Hollywood stars have benefitted from the acai berry juice diet and have achieved their weight loss targets. Acai works in a completely natural manner and increases the metabolism of the body. This means that the weight loss that results from consuming acai berry is completely natural.

Other Health Benefits of Acai Berry
Apart from the weight loss characteristics that acai berry has, there are also many other benefits of consuming this super food. The berry and the juice extracted from the same contain high levels of nutrients that are required by the body. It is high in antioxidants and therefore helps in preventing cancerous growths.

It also contains fibre, amino acids, magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, vitamin A, E and C. These contribute to increasing the immunity levels of the body and keep diseases at bay.  Unique nutrients like oleic acid or omega 9 helps in lowering cholesterol and since it is low on sugar, it is a great fruit for diabetics as well. The Cyanidin 3 Glucoside is known to reverse the process of aging and can help you look better with each passing day.

Acai berry, when consumed regularly can help in improving your complexion and skin tone, aiding digestion, managing insomnia and depression and removing toxins from your system as well. This ensures that your body remains healthy and fit at all times.

The Truth About Weight loss & Diet Supplements

Monday, January 18th, 2010

With the amount of ‘miracle’ diet pills which enter the weight loss market it is none the wonder that some people are sceptical about their effectiveness. Some people may even wonder if any of them actually work? The fact is that a well formulated weight loss supplement can indeed assist weight loss – in many cases with outstanding results.

The problem is that, as with anything, the quality of weight loss supplements can vary greatly and there are different types – meaning you may have to try a few before finding the most effective for you. A further issue can be user expectation. Although I have just said that diet pills can be very effective, in truth their is no such thing as a ‘miracle’ weight loss supplement. Weight loss supplements are a tool to enable your body to function most effectively for weight loss. However if your diet is poor and you don’t do any exercise then it may well be that you are giving your supplements a little too much to do.

Weight loss pills, as with diets, can’t work solely on their own; they require your co-operation. If you can eat relatively healthy and perform a little bit of exercise each week then you will maximise the benefit of whatever diet pills you are using. That’s not to say you should starve yourself – as in fact that is probably the worst thing you can do. If you want to lose weight and keep it off then you need to incorporate a plan which you can maintain – and make part of your lifestyle. We recommend eating 3 healthy meals per day with 3 healthy snacks in between – making a total of at least 6 eating times per day. This is better for your metabolism and means your body is constantly processing.

A word of caution regarding weight loss supplements needs to be addressed here. If you have gained weight quickly recently then consult your doctor to make sure you have no underlying health issues causing your weight gain. It may also be important for the Doctor to ensure you physically healthy enough to pursue a weight loss  and exercise program. If you’re on existing medication or have an existing condition then consult your doctor before using ANY health supplements.

Where possible when looking at pills we recommend natural weight loss remedies to reduce the risk of side effects. You should also look for for products guarantees – at TrooHealthCare.com we offer full money back guarantees even if you have used the product. That’s because we are confident in the quality of our supplements and if the supplements you are looking at are good enough then the company selling them should offer the same.

Understanding BMI & How It’s Calculated

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

On the face of it calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) might seem baffling and impossible to figure out but this is actually not the case. BMI isn’t quantum physics (whatever that is) and because there are convenient BMI calculators available it’s not something we often have to think about. Whether or not you have used a BMI calculator before it’s probable at some point in your life you have been given a BMI score, even if weight loss has never been a particular goal. We’re going to take a closer look at what BMI is and how the score you get is figured out.

Body Mass Index, as it’s name suggests, is a measurement of body mass. By making a comparison of your weight and height, in this case dividing your weight by your height, squared, the BMI formula brings us to a single number.  Your BMI score is then tracked to a special scale,  showing you where you stand in comparison to your ideal weight for your height – i.e. underweight, normal range, overweight, or obese.

BMI does not measure body fat, however, so often the number is misleading when used on athletes or very muscular people.  As muscle weighs more than fat BMI cannot be considered an accurate measure for someone with more than average muscle build.  For the majority of people, though, it’s a very good estimate of body weight in comparison to height.  So how do we arrive at that magic BMI number?

BMI calculations may appear complicated, but they’re really not. At its most simple, the formula is kg/m2.  Or your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters, squared (your height in meters times itself). Somebody who is 5.5 feet tall stands at around 1.7 meters.  Square that number (1.7 times 1.7) and you come up with 2.89. If this person weighs 150 pounds then their weight is approx 68 kilograms.  So in this case the BMI calculation to determine this person’s BMI would be 68 divided by 2.89 = 23.5.

On the BMI scale a person with a score of 18.5 or below suggests that an individual is underweight. The normal weight range is from 18.5 to 24.9.  People who are overweight will calculate a BMI of between 25 to 29.9.  A BMI of 30 or higher indicates obesity. So, as with the example, a person with a BMI score of 23.5 is within their normal weight range, according to the BMI calculations.

If you don’t wish to convert feet and pounds to meters and kilograms, then you could utilise one of the other BMI calculations to figure your score. In the previous example this person’s new formula would be weight in pounds, 150, times 4.88, or 732, divided by their height in feet squared (5.5 times 5.5) which is 30.25.  You would then divide weight by height squared (732 divided by 30.25) and the end result is 24.1, very close to the metric formula’s result. BMI calculations can also be figured by taking weight in pounds times 703, and dividing by height in inches, squared.

Recipes for Detox & Weight Loss Diets

Friday, January 8th, 2010

After the excesses of the holiday season January is always a popular time of year for body detox and weight loss. We all want to shed the extra pounds we have accumulated eating 73 chocolate oranges. It’s always nice to feel a bit healthier too. So what better time to inject our body with some nice healthy detoxing food, perhaps aided by one or two quality detox supplements :-)

The main focus for detox diets is to clean your body’s elimination system of impurities ingested the food we eat and the air we breathe.  Generally speaking, detox diets are formulated to clean the colon and liver, where toxins tend to build up. The key to planning for colon cleansing diets is to include lots of fibre, water, and eating plenty of veggies, nuts, fruits, and beans.  You may notice something missing from the above lists of foods? Meat! The amount of meat you eat needs to be reduced. As well as processed starches! Bread and pasta should be conspicuous by their absence when you are cleansing your bodies’ digestive system

Cleansing drinks are a super way to give an additional boost to the healthy detoxification your body requires.  Simply gather some of your favourite fruits – berries are especially nutritious – and throw them into a blender with some purified water and ice.  Keep whipping them up until they are of a thick-but-drinkable consistency, and you have an amazing breakfast or snack that will assist your colon rid your body of some nasty toxins.

Soups of various kinds are also some of the best foods for detox diets that you can find.  Gazpacho soup and alkaline diet soups are often used for body and colon cleaning diets. Alkaline diets are those that rely mostly on vegetables, nuts, and legumes, all of which encourage movement in the digestive system.

One particularly popular and delicious alkaline soup recipe is for a vegetable broth. Simply cut up celery, broccoli, spinach, and a courgette into small pieces. Add them to a large pot of distilled water, then simmer for around half an hour.  Run the ingredients through a strainer or colander, reserving the broth.  All  of the natural vitamins remain in the water when you boil those veggies, which is why you should only slightly steam your vegetables when eating them.  In this instance you want the broth, so it is fine to  give the vegetables a heavy boil.  Discard the chopped vegetables and eat/drink your tasty and healthy broth.

These are just two examples of good food recipes you can use when detoxing Each of these recipes contain viable ingredients for helping you to lose weight and keeping your body’s waste system working as it ought to. Include plenty of these bad boys in your daily diet for the next few weeks and you will feel good as new.

The Importance of Water to Help Weight Loss

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

One of the most commonly over-looked factors in hindering people’s weight loss is the consumption of water – or lack of it. Unfortunately most people do not realise the importance of ensuring they consume plenty of water each day. Not only does water encourage your system to flush itself out, it also prevents dehydration – a symptom of which can be a feeling of hunger.  In general terms, most weight loss plans are based around consuming fewer calories than we use each day. This appears to be a simple enough concept doesn’t it? So how does water come into significance?

Water contains no calories so you can literally consume as much water as you wish without putting on weight. For most people there are also no health considerations to consider when consuming water – except perhaps if you have a water retention issue. In relation to other drinks though you do not need to think twice before drinking water. Hopefully it is already part of your daily diet but for many people it is not.

Water helps to flush out your system and is one of the best liquids you can drink. If you are attempting  to shed weight, then ultimately you should totally remove any sugar based drinks from your daily diet. Carbonated drinks such as coke are good examples of such drinks – though diluting juices can also contain lots of sugar too. Such drinks contain nothing of substance and are crammed with artificial ingredients, not to mention sugar and calories. If you consume two cans of fizzy drink per day, those extra calories could be the difference between gaining and losing weight. Exchanging these with water can eliminate the cause of your weight gain. How easy is that?

Admittedly some people don’t like the taste of water. Water lovers don’t understand this, but it’s a fact. In all likelihood, people who say they don’t like water are referring to plain unfiltered tap water. Tap water can vary in taste depending on where you live and even on a house by house basis – I hated the water in my old house but love it where I live now. If you’re a person who hates the taste of water based on what flows out of your tap then you should try buying spring water. Even the taste of spring water can change by brand, so if you don’t like the first the keep trying them all until you find one you enjoy.

Although water is a critical component of weight loss plans, keep in mind that water is not a substitute for food, but it should simply complement your daily diet. Instead of a fizzy drinks or sugar fruit juice at dinner, have a glass or two of water. It is also recommended to begin the day off with a refreshing glass of water to rehydrate from your nights sleep and encourage your brain to get active. Drinking water and maintaining body hydration will also enhance brain function and keep you alert – you might just find it works better than your coffee which dehydrates you.

To conclude if you don’t currently consume plenty of water on a daily basis you are not only harming your health, you could also be hindering any weight loss goals. Water is an amazing natural substance that we all need. In the developed world we are fortunate enough to have freedom of access to it. There are no excuses for not taking your daily allowance.

Using Cider Vinegar to Aid Weight Loss

Monday, January 4th, 2010

When talking about weight loss supplements there is an old school remedy that is often missed – Cider Vinegar. We’re all guilty of looking for the next weight loss mega supplement or fad, and sometimes this leads us to forget about the old faithful. The beauty about cider vinegar is that you might well have some already in your own cupboard, and if not you can always choose the popular apple cider vinegar tablets.

So exactly how does apple cider vinegar assist with your weight loss? The fact is, no one really knows for certain. Scientific studies have not been able to categorically prove anything with regards cider vinegar and its connection to weight loss. The reason to give cider vinegar a try is mainly down to previous results in tests and of previous and current users who have lost weight thanks to it.

There are a  some theories as to why cider vinegar helps in weight loss. It is believed that it speeds up a person’s natural metabolism, making our body digest and change food into energy quicker. Others have reported that cider vinegar actively burns the calories in your body to help you shift weight. Meanwhile other reports say that cider vinegar supports cleansing of the liver, an organ that can have a big impact on weight loss.

One recent experiment demonstrated that taking cider vinegar with or right before a meal can help you feel more full, and thus control eating habits. The test was a very small one, but the results looked very good. Admittedly Cider vinegar weight loss still has to be tested more before we can be sure just how much it helps. There’s evidence that ancient Egyptians used cider vinegar for weight loss, and with other evidence of its effect it seems to have a lot going for it!

There are a couple of different ways that cider vinegar can be used in your weight loss program. The simplest method is to add a small amount of cider vinegar to a glass of water or juice, and drink it with a meal. Alternatively you can buy apple cider vinegar tablets or capsules that, as per their name, have cider vinegar in them. Some of these supplements contain other vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B6 and lecithin, which may have more effect than cider vinegar alone.

Aside from weight loss properties, cider vinegar is extremely healthy for you. It is naturally potent in vitamins and minerals, and can assist with a number of medical problems and improve your general health. For example, cider vinegar contains potassium, which helps reduce blood pressure. It also contains fibre, which can absorb the cholesterol that can lead to  heart disease. Those are just a few examples of health issues it helps with – there are more such as help with digestion, sore throats, arthritis pain and even diabetes.

Despite all the benefits of using cider vinegar for weight loss, it has some down sides as well. The most important thing to watch out for is that cider vinegar is very acidic, meaning it can burn and damage your teeth, mouth or throat. It is very important that you dilute cider vinegar in water or juice before drinking it. As with any supplement or remedy always contact your doctor before trying cider vinegar if you have any serious medical conditions.

Revealed: The Truth About The 500 Calorie Diet

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Are you a bit of a risk taker when you want to lose weight? If you are then you may have done or considered the 500 calorie diet. The truth about this diet is it is considered an extreme form of dieting; and despite being potentially dangerous it is highly popular. Low calorie diets are common and 500 calories is at the lower end of the scale.

A diet is considered low calorie if it involves ingesting no more than 1200 calories per day. The idea of a low calorie diet is to lose weight quickly. If not administered correctly they can be dangerous and as such it is important to plan your 500 calorie diet with a professional dietician or nutritionist before starting. This article will help you to decide if the 500 calorie diet is right for you.

It is well known that the way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in. However a very low calorie diet can actually do more harm than good. When your body is craving more calories (energy) it can affect your metabolic rate. This means your body actually starts to eat away at your muscle mass.

It is doing this for the purpose of converting the muscle mass to energy, since there are no food reserves to take from. Because gaining muscle is the path to losing fat, this can have a highly detrimental effect on your body.

500 calories per day may be sufficient for some people depending on their:
- Gender
- Activity level
- Height
- Body type
- Overall health and well being

For other people though, particularly overweight people, consuming only 500 calories a day is almost like starving yourself and is actually counter-productive in the long run. Your body is more than likely used to taking in over 2000 calories per day and up to 5000 or more. If you all of a sudden drop to 500 calories or less your body moves into starvation mode. Your metabolism then slows down to conserve energy.

While you are on the 500 calorie diet your body will learn to live with fewer calories. That means if you go back to your old high calorie habits (as all too many people do) you will have a sudden gain in weight, which is more than what would have occurred, had you not gone on your low cal diet.

The only real way to determine your ideal daily calorie intake is by using a bmr/amr calculator. You will then know how many calories you need to be healthy and to support your lifestyle. If you take 500 calories away from this, then you have the ideal number of calories, to take in per day to help you get your weight down.

As men and women are obviously different their ideal calorie intake is also different. This of course means while the average woman may need only 1200 to 1300 calories a day to survive, her male counterpart may need from 1500 to 1600. Again this is why it is so important for you to consult with your physician before starting any diet.

In conclusion a 500 calorie diet can counter-productive at best and outright dangerous at its worst. There are certainly more effective and long term weight loss methods to consider. Namely eating a healthy and balanced diet, eating little and often. Try and eat 6 times per day to keep your metabolism ticking over. If you want to boost your efforts you can try regular exercise while also utilising quality weight loss supplements.

5 Tips to Help You Lose Holiday Weight Gain

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

We’re at that time of year when we are all a little more relaxed with what we consume. A few extra drinks and being that little more generous with the portions is normal – and why not! The only problem is by January your pants are generally feeling tighter and the scales creaking louder.

Holiday weight loss is not much different from the usual efforts to shed the excess, but lets re-cap on good practice. This is what the health experts have to advise on this:

  1. Take in fewer calories than you require for your present weight, and you would drop kilos. Cutting butter, oil, sugar, red meat is a good way to cut empty calories.
  2. Go nuts for the ‘F’: Fibres and Fruits taken as a large part of every meal fill your stomach with low calorie stuff, and decrease your appetite for things that might be fattening. They also delay the absorption of the fatty components of your diet. High fibre is one of the reasons why acai berry supplements can help you to lose weight.
  3. Rev your routine. Burn the excess with regular exercise. Some aerobics, swimming, stretching, brisk walking at least for 20 minutes should figure in your daily scheme of things. Short bursts of intense activity burn more calories and almost 35% more fat-as per a recent research finding. Heavy exercises are not recommended, unless you are used to them. The idea is to burn fat regularly, not to burn out.
  4. Even small steps make a big difference. Carry your shopping up the stairs instead of using the elevator and you burn 130 more calories. Wash your car yourself instead of taking it to the service station, or just take your dog for a walk around your locality and you could zap 300 calories. Park a little further from the office . well you get the idea.
  5. Eat little and often – it helps to keep your blood sugar balanced and keeps the metabolism churning over. Try eating  times per day (healthily of course) instead of 3.

The bottom line is: ‘be aware of what you put on your plate’. Be mindful about how much you consume and how much you burn to get back into shape fast.

Six Great Health Reasons to Consider Maqui Berry Supplements

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The Maqui is still a relative amateur in the superfruit world and is not well known in the UK, with very few retailers offering it. However with the health properties contained within maqui berry (being up to three times more potent in anti-oxidant value than the superlative Acai) it will not be long before this changes. Maqui berry is a purple coloured fruit found in the Patagonia region of South America, mainly in Chile. Although this berry has had many medicinal uses among Mapuche Indians for centuries, it actually only started appearing as a health supplement within the last year or two. As you will see this is one superfood that you should consider utilising. Lets see what gives the Maqui the edge over most other berries out there:

1. Maqui contains a much higher amount of antioxidants than any other superfood – including acai. This means that our body is better protected from toxins, chemicals and free radicals that cause us harm.

2. Maqui is  a new kid on the block in terms of weight loss but is now available to help us overcome any weight control problems. In a recent six month study at the University of Austin in Texas Maqui Berry was found to be 400% more effective than Acai for weight loss, with 92% actually managing to keep the weight off in a check up 6 months later. The fact that the berry is loaded with antioxidants is one of the reasons it often contributes to weight loss. Ridding our body of toxins and allowing us to become healthier, increase metabolism and shed the excess.

3. Additionally, the maqui berry is very high in anthocyanins and polyphenols levels. According to research, Maqui berry has 10 times more polyphenols and 100 times more anthocyanins than red wine. This makes the berry extremely high in nutritional value while it is also a great source of vitamin c, calcium, potassium, and iron.

4. Maqui berry can help boost our immune system and promotes healthy aging. This also means the berry is excellent for preventing disease, illness and even reducing cancer risks.

5. Maqui berry is a natural COX-2-inhibitor and it has anti-inflammatory properties. These anti-inflammatory side effects can help the bones and joints of the body, especially for anyone with arthritis.

6. Maqui can fight against aging and keep us looking younger through it’s skin care properties. It promotes energy level increase so we can fit more into our days, stay healthy and live longer.

Although on the face of it this may seem like a supplement to replace Acai, on the contrary it is a supplement that can work brilliantly alongside Acai. Although the Maqui is more potent in a lot of areas the acai does have its own strengths – such as higher omega content for example. It’s not necessarily a straight choice between them but Maqui is definitely something you should look to introduce into your lifestyle. When it came off the production line at Troo Health Care the first order was my own!

Battle of the Superfoods – Acai Berry vs Maqui Berry

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

The Acai Berry and more recently the Maqui Berry are the two top super berries, both hailing from the exotic South America. The Acai comes from the dense rainforests of the Amazon, while Maqui is found further south, in the Patgonian area of Argentina and Chile.

Between the two the Acai fares somewhat better in taste, but what keeps consumers interested in these berries are their scientifically proven antioxidant contents and overall health benefits. Antioxidants protect our body against free radicals which are unstable molecules produced during day to day functioning of the cell. The antioxidant activity of these two berries is attributed to their content of a phytochemical, Anthocyanin. These antioxidant packed berries empower us to fight the pull of age, wear a healthy skin, stay active and look young.

Consumers, in their quest for the one which will promise a longer and disease-free life are now between two horns while searching for the overall better among the two berries.

The acai berry is an excellent source of anthocyanin. No one can argue against the benefits this berry provides to the human body.

The little deep purple Maqui berry on the other hand has now set the bar higher and in doing so set the wellness industry on fire. With its ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) content 4-10 times higher than that of the Acai berry the Maqui is set to become the new king of health supplements. Maqui berries also contain minerals such as iron, calcium and potassium; along with Vitamins A and C.

But the Acai does still win against the Maqui Berry in its rich content of Omega 3 essential fatty acids.

Finally, the factors that will drive home the popularity of Acai and Maqui berries are scientific research and raising public awareness of their superfruit credibility. Both the Acai and the potentially improved Maqui are touted to benefit weight loss, boost immune support, possess anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-carcinogenic properties, and definitely provide long term benefits like help to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
